Wedding Songs for a Themed Wedding

Your choice of wedding songs is an important feature of your wedding day. Songs will set the tone and ambiance of the day and are an important signal to your guests when each element of the day ends and another one begins.

Wedding themes have become a popular choice amongst couples in recent years but with them comes the problem of choosing wedding songs which compliment the theme. Whilst finding songs for a wedding without a theme can be hard enough, finding for a themed event can prove even trickier!

One of the first steps you need to take is to list down all the elements of your wedding in which you will need music and specifically wedding songs. These include:

  • Your wedding ceremony – recessional, processional, signing the register
  • Your cocktail hour – background music
  • Your wedding breakfast – background music
  • Cutting of the wedding cake
  • First dance
  • Father/daughter dance
  • Mother/son dance
  • Evening party
  • Last dance

Next you will need to look at how you want your music to be played. Will you use a sound system, DJ, live band or musicians? If your wedding ceremony is a civil one then your choice of songs cannot have any religious reference to them and a religious ceremony may have stricter protocols regarding music. You will need to talk to your wedding officiant and to your reception venue about the types of music that are acceptable and how they can be played.

Now you need to consider your wedding theme. If your theme is an historical one for instance medieval or 1930’s, then it may be easier to discover the write wedding songs. Do some research on the music of the time and you will probably come across musicians, bands, groups and even compilation CD’s of music from the era. If your wedding theme is something like a garden theme or beach wedding, then your choices are probably slightly easier as the music doesn’t have to coordinate to anything in particular (you are unlikely to want to play a chorus of sea shanties for a beach wedding!).

Classical and instrumental music can suit just about any wedding theme but it is worth taking your time to listen to as many different tracks as possible to put together a playlist of appropriate tunes. You may also come across music that relates to a specific era giving you the opportunity to slip a few of these songs into a playlist of more traditional wedding music!

Once you have a selection of wedding songs you will need to work out when they will be played and how. Sound systems are great for small informal weddings, whilst string quartets or soloists are nice for a larger more traditional wedding. Your first dance song can be anything you want and as such should be a more personal choice of a song that has special meaning and significance to you both.
